The International Fund
for Agricultural Development (IFAD, the UN agency) announced Monday a
donation of $ 5.66 million to Haiti to improve agricultural production
in some poor areas of northern countries devastated by the January 12
earthquake.
The agreement was signed
in Saint-Domingue by the Haitian Minister of Agriculture Joanas Ford and
Director of the Division Latin America and the Caribbean of Fida
Josefina Stubbs, according to a statement from Fida broadcast from the
headquarters of the UN organization to Rome.
Aimed at helping 18,000
families, this gift will complete a program designed especially Fida "to
support more than 240,000 small farmers by providing seeds, fertilizers
and farming tools," said Mrs. Stubbs.
"This donation is in
addition to ongoing project to increase agricultural production and
modernization of irrigation infrastructure," the statement said.
Joanas Ford must go in
Rome on Friday to meet with the heads of three UN agencies based in Rome
(FAO-IFAD-WFP) and discuss with them agricultural development in the
medium and long term food security and the process of Planning nutrition.
Although the assessment
of damage caused by the earthquake in agriculture is still ongoing,
vital agricultural infrastructure such as storage facilities and major
roads were damaged in rural areas.
